I would like to suggest to have a good look at yEditor and Diagram Designer.
@jkvasan, thanks for sharing this info. Can you please share the link from where we can download these softwares ? Can this software be used for commercial purposes ?
@Wale. @nsuresheeeThank you for the suggestions. I have downloaded the IAR VisualState and it seems to be good enough. I like the reporting document it generates. I am just trying to get around the Microsoft licensing universe.

Re: Flowcharting/UML/Block Diagrams
Hi nsureshee,
Yes you are right, DIA is good tool and a nice alternate to VISIO. But the problem is that at my work I have to create .vsd file in order to make other to read my diagram. So i feel visio is suitabel and well know to everyone than DIA

Re: Flowcharting/UML/Block Diagrams
Yes goafrit you are right, product of universities ( Uppsala & Alabog universities). Alternatively, you could try Visual State designer - another good tool for system verification and validation. Why i prefer IAR VisualSTATE to Uppaal, it generates ( 1) C++ code with states, events, actions, transitions are taking care of, (2) Project reports - text.
There is also a product for hardware probing aside VisualSTATE tool, like IAR In-circuit Debugging Probes for ARM, Reneasas RX processors, and Freescale Coldfire.
"An in-circuit debugging probe connects the chip's JTAG/SWD ports via USB to a PC, enabling you to use the PC to view exactly what happens on the chip when the application is running. JTAGjet is an advanced debug probe for high-end applications, while I-jet and IAR J-Link are fully plug-and-play compatible and easy to use" http://www.iar.com/en/Products/IAR-visualSTATE/
I did not know that many people are using UPPAAL which is a product from a university of the same name. I have used it in many real-time systems verifications and validations while in grad school. But these days, I am very afraid since they have made it clear that you cannot use it free for commercial applications.
>>The Uppaal tool is free for non-commercial applications in academia only. For commercial applications a commercial license is required.>>
Do you know any good alternative that one can use without fear of IP lawyers? I want free stuff as my business is not making a lot of money yet for the huge fees.
Yes. I have used MS Visio and it is simply one of the best tools out there for circuit drawing with all the nice border shading. The main problem is that it is not free. When the 60 days elapse, the whole world of Microsoft will fall on you.

Re: Flowcharting/UML/Block Diagrams
"You can use MS-VISIO for better schematic/Block diagram and flowchart entry. It's a very useful, user friendly software package".
You are right very user friendly. Infact, MS Visio is a very nice application, am using it often. I would also suggest this tool - UPPAAL is very useful for verification and validation of real-time systems modelled as networks of TIMED AUTOMATA with extended data types. Free for academics, commercial license is required though.
Wale, you are right. For debugging I had used open source software for quite some time. But unfortunately I had enabled auto update and one day it seems that tool got locked with a message, "your free version is no longer available". All my files and debugging history got locked up. There after I used to take daily back up reports with most of the open source .
